Basil, Bel Paese & Asparagus Strata

Directions

Beat the eggs and milk products with garlic, red black pepper and salt. Butter an 8 by 12 or 9 by 13 inch glass baking dish. Place bread slices in the bottom of dish covering the entire area. Sprinkle shredded cheese on top of bread. Drizzle pesto on top of cheese. Lay asparagus spears on top of cheese-pesto layer and then pour the egg mixture over everything. You may have to press the bread down into the pan so it does not rise above the bread. Cover tightly and let sit overnight or for at least 6 hours. Bake at 350 for 30 to 40 minutes in the upper third of the oven. Strata should be puffy and brown and a knife inserted in the middle should come out clean. Let it sit 5 to 10 minutes before serving. This is a wonderful brunch item when served with tossed greens, a nice grain salad and some fresh fruit. Hope all enjoy!!
