Cheesecake Squares

Top Layer: 1 package (8 oz.) cream cheese, softened 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1 egg 2 tablespoons milk 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon zest 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoons finely chopped walnuts Position rack in center of oven. Preheat oven to moderate (350°). Butter 8 x 8 x 2-inch-square pan. Prepare Bottom Layer: Beat together butter and brown sugar in medium-size bowl until light and fluffy, 1 to 2 minutes. With a spoon, stir in flour and walnuts to make stiff dough. Remove 3/4 cup of the dough for topping and reserve. Press remaining 3/4 cup into prepared pan in even layer. Bake in preheated moderate oven (350°) for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Leave oven on. Meanwhile, prepare Top Layer: Beat together cream cheese and sugar in medium-size bowl until smooth. Beat in egg, milk and vanilla until blended. Beat in lemon zest and lemon juice. Spread cream cheese mixture over Bottom Layer. Crumble reserved 3/4 cup of dough over top. Sprinkle with the 2 tablespoons walnuts. Bake in preheated oven (350°) for about 30 minutes or until puffed in center. Remove pan to wire rack and cool to room temperature. Cut into 16 small squares.
