Peach Nut Squares

Preheat oven to moderate (375 degree. Grease and flour a 13x9x2-inch baking pan. Combine brown sugar, the 2 tablespoons flour, cinnamon and softened butter in a small bowl; blend. Stir in nuts. Set aside. Sift the 3-1/2 cups flour, baking powder and salt onto wax paper. Beat shortening, sugar and eggs in a large bowl with an electric mixer, about 3 minutes or until creamy. Beat in milk. Add sifted flour mixture and orange rind; beat until smooth and thick. Turn cake batter into prepared pan; spread evenly. Arrange drained peach slices in rows on top of batter. Sprinkle brown sugar topping over peaches. Bake in preheated moderate oven (375 degree for 1 hour or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan on wire rack.
