Spiced Apple and Pear Cobbler

Fruit 2 lbs. Golden Delicious apples, peeled, halved, cored 2 lbs. pears, peeled, halved, cored 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 3/4 cup plus 2 teaspoons sugar 1/4 cup all purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 1/4 cup sliced almonds Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream (optional) Position rack in center of oven and then preheat to 400 ° F. For topping: Insert Steel knife. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, cardamom, cream of tartar, cloves and salt in processor. Add butter and pulse using on/off turns until mixture resembles coarse meal. Add sour cream and blend just until dough begins to come together. Do not overprocess; do not allow dough to form ball. Transfer dough to large plastic bag. Working through bag, form dough into square; flatten into 9-inch square. Chill while preparing fruit. For fruit: Insert Thick Slicer. Stand apple and pear halves in feed tube and slice using medium pressure. Transfer to 8x8x2-inch baking dish. Combine lemon juice and vanilla in small bowl. Pour over fruit and toss to coat. Combine 3/4 cup sugar, flour and cloves in small bowl. Sprinkle over fruit and toss to coat. Rearrange fruit to distribute evenly. Wipe pan rim clean. Place dough atop fruit and gently tuck edges under. Cut 3-inch slit in center. Sprinkle dough with remaining 2 teaspoons sugar, then almonds. Place cobbler on cookie sheet and bake until crust is brown, about 40 minutes. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired. (Can be prepared 4 hours ahead. To rewarm, place cobbler in cold oven; set oven temperature at 350 °F and bake 12 to 15 minutes.) 6 servings dess 48
