Directions
1. Bake and cool cookies as normal. Decide on the design you would like to put on the cookies. Remember that stained glass usually has a story within the panels. 2. Make your royal icing colored black (for the leading) place it in a pastry bag fitted with a #2 or #3 tip. 3. Outline your cookie. Place design in the middle and then add the angled lines to complete the stained glass lead. 4. Let outline dry while you are making the glaze. Glaze is 1 cup powdered sugar, 1T. clear corn syrup, and 2 T. water. Mix very well. Remember to continue stirring the glaze every time you need some. It separates quickly. 5. Using a paint palette, a 6 pot palette can be purchased at a local craft store, spoon enough glaze into one of the pots without overflowing. Choose your colors. Choose your main color for the center design and squeeze a small drop of color into the glaze. Stir it very well! 6. Using a paintbrush, drop the glaze into the space, filling it to the top of the lead line. Continue until the space is full. Using the leftover glaze, go to another cookie and fill in space. 7. Continue with other colors until all the designs are full. Let stand for about 30 minutes until the glaze dries to the touch. 8. Once the glaze has set, re-lead the entire cookie. By doing a second line, it pulls out the color of the glass and makes a richer look. HINTS: Sit and stir the glaze. It will become blotchy if you dont keep it stirred. You want it as clear as possible for the best looking stained glass effect. For this dove design, I used edible dusting powder to highlight the wings of the dove and tail feathers. Use a lightly dampened brush and dip into the pot of desired dust color. Then, very lightly touch it to the wet glaze. You can flavor your glaze by removing 1/2 t. of water (BEFORE YOU MIX IT TOGETHER) and add 1/2 t. of desired flavor. Use candy paint brushes found at the local craft store in the candy making department. You can use ANY kind of art paintbrush, just make sure it is new, washed first and NEVER used for anything but frosting.
